Advice & Information Bees have been making and we have been using honey and beeswax for thousands of years. Not just for its sweet taste, we have actually been using honey therapeutically for centuries. - Ancient Roman physicians used honey to help their patients fall asleep.
- The Greek physician, Hippocrates, wrote about the healing powers of honey and made up preparations using honey to heal skin disorders, ulcers and sores.
- The ancient Egyptians treated cataracts, wounds and burns with honey.
- Later in World War 1, German physicians treated soldiers battle wounds with honey and cod liver oil.
- Now opera singers still use honey to boost their energy and soothe sore throats.
The external healing properties of honey have been much researched and documented in recent years and it is these which are of most significance to our products. Natural anti-oxidant Honey prevents oxidation when exposed to the air. Its consistency provides a barrier to all exposed areas thus preventing contamination. Anti-inflammatory The high sugar content draws on excessive fluids around wounds thus reducing inflammation and increasing capillary blood supply. The result is increased healing rate. Antibacterial Honey is a very effective antibiotic even with antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria. Unlike antiseptics and antibiotics honey does not impair the healing process. Case studies have shown remarkable effects from the use of honey on infected post meningococcal septiceamia wounds and skin grafts. In each of the cases honey was used as a last resort but the doctors now feel had it been used earlier the resulting tissue damage would have been far less. Cell regenerator Honey stimulates the re-growth of tissue involved in the healing process. Also it stimulates the re-growth of blood capillaries and fibroblasts to replace the connective tissue of the deeper layers of the skin and produce the collagen fibres to add strength to the repair. Because honey does not stick to the wound bed it reduces the pain of dressing changes and means no new tissue is damaged during dressing changes. Antiviral Honey helps to build our own immunity and our bodies resistance to viruses. We have known for a long time the benefits of taking honey to prevent or treat colds and sore throats. Anti-carcinogenic Recent research has taken place to show that by using honey on the skin, and pre and post operatively for surgery involving cancer, it greatly reduces the risk of tumours developing in the surgical scar. Wound cleansing When honey mixes with body fluids it releases hydrogen peroxide which cleanses the wound. It also draws on the wound bed to lift any debris out. The use of honey for the treatment of burns has undergone much study in the USA. Trials show honey to be more effective in controlling infection in burns than silver sulphadiazine, the most widely used antibiotic cream in hospitals. Honey is used in all our products and it is important that we understand the amazing effects of this unique material so we can help our customers understand the wonderful benefits of using one of natures oldest health products.
